Just what shape will our city (and town) centres need to be in by 2050? We all know that changes in retailing, digitisation of just-about-everything, and changing patterns of working and living are already disrupting long-standing assumptions. Add those to the climate emergency, the drive to net-zero, and the ecological crisis, and the challenges can look quite overwhelming.

The aim of this webinar is to step back for an hour to consider opportunities arising from the convergence of these big changes and imagine how we can reshape our city (and town) centres to be resilient, supportive and adaptable places.

Dr Cath Jackson (University of Sheffield), Prof James White (University of Glasgow) and Paul Seddon (Nottingham’s Director of Planning & Transport) look at examples of positive urban change in Nottingham and beyond, and make a start on identifying some core place-principles for healthy city centres. As the keynote speakers, Dr Jackson and Prof White begin the webinar by outlining the key findings of their team’s four-year (2018-2022) research project, ‘REPAIR’ (Real Estate, Place Adaptation and Innovation within an integrated Retailing System). This project was recently highlighted in the RTPI’s Planning Research Matters series.

Steve Kemp details the webinar discussion in his blog.
